For the Hawks and Cavaliers, it all comes down to one game.

The NBA’s Play-In Tournament continues at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday, April 15, when the two teams meet at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse for a chance at the East’s No. 8 seed and a first-round meeting with the top-seeded Heat.

Cleveland, which finished eighth in the East with a 44-38 record, will look to bounce back from a loss to the Nets in Tuesday’s Play-In opener. Atlanta, which finished ninth with a 43-39 record, will try to build off the momentum of a dominant win over the Hornets in Wednesday’s Play-In game.

While the winner heads to South Beach, the loser goes home.

Second Quarter

8:42 p.m. — Hawks center Clint Capela has gone down with an apparent right knee injury.

Capela committed a hard foul on Cavaliers rookie Evan Mobley, who then fell backwards into Capela.

The apparent injury caused Capela to limp off the floor with 30.7 seconds until the half.

8:33 p.m. — The Cavs have responded.

After Atlanta cut the deficit to five, Cleveland goes on a 7-2 run to get the lead back out to double-digits. With 3:04 remaining in the first half, the Cavs lead 53-43.

Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse is, well … rocking.

8:23 p.m. — Bogdan Bogdanovic has entered the chat.

Bogdanovic has 10 points off the bench on perfect 4-of-4 shooting and the Hawks have begun chipping away at the deficit. As Trae Young is just 3 of 8 from the field, the Hawks must like where they’re at right now.

The Cavs lead 44-37 with 6:43 left in the half. Timeout on the floor.

End of First Quarter: Cavaliers 36, Hawks 25

8:11 p.m. — After one, the Cavs have built an 11-point lead.

Cleveland, which shot 13 of 25 from the field and 6 of 9 from 3-point range in the quarter, is led by 11 points from Lauri Markkanen while Darius Garland has nine points, three assists and three steals.

In his first action in over a month, Jarrett Allen has made his presence felt with six points.

Trae Young’s six points lead the way for the Hawks, who are shooting 12 of 25 from the field and 1 of 7 from 3-point range. Clint Capela has pulled down seven rebounds to go along with his four points.

7:59 p.m. — Cleveland is on fire to start this one off. The Cavs are 10 of 16 (62.5 percent) from the field and 6 of 7 (85.7 percent) from 3-point range early on.

Cleveland leads 26-14 with 4:03 remaining in the quarter, causing Nate McMillan to signal for a time out.

Lauri Markkanen is up to a game-high 11 points.

7:53 p.m. — The Cavs have made an early statement.

Lauri Markkanen has eight points early on and Cleveland leads 15-6 with 6:59 left in the first.

How does the NBA Play-In Tournament work?

  • The NBA Play-In Tournament will be held after the conclusion of the 2021-22 regular season and before the start of the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs. The teams that finish Nos. 1-6 in the standings of each conference will be guaranteed playoff spots. Teams Nos. 7-10 will enter the Play-In Tournament.
  • Each conference’s Nos. 7 and 8 teams will face off, with the winner earning the No. 7 seed in the playoffs. The loser will still have one more opportunity to reach the playoffs.
  • Each conference’s Nos. 9 and 10 teams will face off, with the winner advancing to play the loser of the No. 7-vs.-No. 8 game. The loser of the No. 9-vs.-No. 10 game will be eliminated from playoff contention.
  • The loser of the No. 7-vs.-No. 8 game and the winner of the No. 9-vs.-No. 10 game will then play against each other. The winner of that game will be the No. 8 seed in the playoffs. The loser will be eliminated from playoff contention.
  • Beyond the Play-In Tournament, the 2022 NBA Playoffs will follow the typical format, with full best-of-seven series all the way through the NBA Finals.
